National Youth Service Day

Youth participants from the National Urban Coalition for Unity and Peace, Inc. (N.U.C.U.P.) took part in leading a community beautification project called “Keeping Our Community Beautiful.” The event took place on April 5 at Martel Homes in East Point, a suburb of metro Atlanta.

N.U.C.U.P. youth, in collaboration with East Point’s operation Weed and Seed initiative, focused their efforts on community beautification for the residents of Martel Homes. Some residents will received yard beautifications done by the young people enrolled in the N.U.C.U.P. after-school program. “We are participating in this effort in collaboration with the Tri-County National Youth Service Day Collaborative with Cobb, Dekalb, and Fulton counties,” stated James Lewis, N.U.C.U.P. founder and president. “This spring break project gave our students an opportunity to give back to their community, Lewis added.

The beautifications consisted primarily of planting flowers for the more senior and elderly residents. All the flowers and tools for the project were donated by several metro area Home Depot stores working in conjunction with Lewis. The youth workers were treated to a trip to Sweetwater Creek State Park and a pizza party following the event.
