Volunteer for the Lean On Me Mentoring Program
Students
from area colleges and universities, along with other professionals and
civic-minded individuals, are being recruited to serve as mentors for 9th grade
high school students. Participating students will be assigned a mentor that will
assist the mentee with academic assignments; they will also share high school
situations, circumstances and experiences that hinder or support the high school
journey. Field trips and educational and recreational activities will be
provided for mentors to further share memorable events with their mentee.
With
the high school dropout rate at an all time high, the community must do all
we can to support, encourage, and develop innovative ways to see that our youth
complete their high school education. This is where the students in higher
education can play a vital role in the life of the 9th grade student as he/she
begins to matriculate through high school. High school students today face
numerous hindering challenges as they strive to complete their high school
education.
Work with N.U.C.U.P. and its partner organizations to become part of the
generation that answered the
call
to action to assist students. We can help them avoid the pitfalls of destruction
as they face the challenges and daily distractions in their way towards success.
Students are often distracted due to negative economic circumstances, peer
pressure, sexuality, drugs, and violence in an environment that is not always
kind or understanding. This is where mentors make the difference in the lives of
the young high school student. |
